Biography

Anna Vainshtein is a physiologist and muscle biologist. Her research interests focus on skeletal muscle metabolism and the role of mitochondria and autophagy in this process. Dr. Vainshtein completed her B.Sc. (Hons), MSc. and Ph.D. at the school of Kinesiology and Health Science at York University, Toronto, Canada. It is... read morethere that she discovered her passion for mitochondria, autophagy, muscle biology and cellular bioenergetics. Her interest in Autophagy and mitophagy developed throughout the autophagy “renaissance”, as the multifaceted role of this recycling process in metabolism and muscle health became apparent. She then pursued a fellowship at the Venetian Institute for Molecular Medicine in Padova, Italy to further delve into the roles and mechanisms of mitophagy in skeletal muscle. She then completed her postdoctoral training at the department of Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, USA where she broadened her interests to encompass genetic regulation the autophagy-lysosome system. Dr. Vainshtein has also served as a co-chair of the Gordon Research Seminar on Autophagy in health and disease. Dr. Vainshtein is currently the director of Craft Science Inc. a science communications consulting firm based out of Toronto Canada.
