I have decided to divide my talk into two parts because there are different issues which relate to pharmacovigilance, but which are not really straightforward connected. In this first part, I would like to talk about the history and disasters in pharmacovigilance, I would like to address the science and knowledge which are needed in pharmacovigilance and the areas of research. I would like to outline what is the link between pharmacovigilance and public health and what is the needed clinical medicine expertise in pharmacovigilance.
